Unclaimed money to be donated to local children’s home

An unclaimed property check presented to a local car dealership will be donated to a children’s home in Cabell County. West Virginia State Treasurer John D. Perdue presented the unclaimed property check in the amount of $11,187.83 to Dutch Miller Kia of Barboursville today.

Chris Miller, owner of the dealership, accepted the unclaimed funds on behalf of his business and announced he would donate the money to the Hovah Hall Underwood Children’s Home in Ona.

“This youth shelter works to help our most vulnerable population here in Cabell County. I have supported this organization in the past, and today I am excited to be able to turn this money over to such a worthy cause,” said Miller.

The unclaimed funds due to the dealership are the result of more than two dozen smaller business transactions or commissions that were never processed.

“Unclaimed property comes to the state for a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes it’s an uncashed check and sometimes it’s insurance money due to an individual or business. Regardless of the reason, it’s my duty as State Treasurer to return those funds to the rightful owners,” said Perdue.

Perdue noted that he is especially pleased to hear the dealership will donate the money to a worthy cause.

“When we return money to an organization, it is often mistaken for a donation, but that’s not the case. My office only returns unclaimed funds that are the rightful property of businesses and individuals. However, today it is exciting to know that Dutch Miller Kia is taking the initiative to use this unclaimed money as a donation and turn it over to a deserving local charity,” said Perdue.

Since taking office, Treasurer Perdue has returned approximately $168 million in unclaimed property funds to rightful owners. For more information on West Virginia’s Unclaimed Property program, visit www.wvtreasury.com.
