“Our courses give teachers the tools they need to incorporate financial education topics into their everyday lessons,” said Perdue. “Sound money management skills need to be introduced to students before they acquire bad habits. These courses will help teachers do just that.”

The courses introduce participants to many basic personal finance lessons that may be integrated into various grades and subject areas. They also show how these lessons can be used to meet state content standards and learning objectives. It is especially timely given the more extensive state standards for teaching personal finance, economics and 21st century skills that are in place today.

Introductory Level Course

Participants will spend two days learning how to utilize high-quality, free financial education resources available from many government agencies and private organizations. In addition to educators, the course is open to others, such as youth group leaders and financial institution personnel, who want to learn how to teach introductory lessons in personal finance.

Intermediate Level Course
The Intermediate level course is perfect for those who have already taken the introductory level class or for those who regularly teach personal finance topics. It will focus on larger scale classroom projects and more comprehensive programs.

Participants may register to earn the three hours of professional development graduate credit toward increment qualification and certification renewal needs. If taken for credit, the registration fee is $130 for West Virginia University Extended Learning or $105 for Marshall University. If not taken for credit, the course is free.

Those taking the course for credit will implement financial education lessons in their own classrooms next fall. The course wraps up with an additional class meeting in December when class final project scrapbooks are presented. Participants use the scrapbooks to document the financial education lessons and activities they conducted during the fall. Credit is awarded at the end of the first semester in December 2008.
