The cardinal was named West Virginia's official bird on March 7, 1949, by a vote of public school students and civic organizations. Male northern cardinals are various shades of red and have a black mask from the eyes to the throat. Females are brown, with touches of red. The cardinal's song is given by both the males and the females. In most northern songbirds, only the male sings. Cardinal nests are bulky masses of twigs and strips of bark, lined with grasses.
