Missing Money
U.S. Department of the Treasury provides a link to several searchable databases that you can use to find unclaimed money from old savings bonds, HUD/FHA mortgage insurance refunds and credit union accounts.
Additionally, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. database contains the names of people who are owed uncollected pension benefits.
The Internal Revenue Service reports two types of unclaimed funds. One type is known as an undeliverable refund, in which the government tried to mail a refund and it was not received by the taxpayer. The second type is an unclaimed refund, in which a person was not required to file a tax return but is owed a refund of the Earned Income Tax Credit or taxes withheld from wages.
