Weston, W.Va. – In association with Money Smart Week, the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office will host a Get a Life budget simulation at 1 p.m. Wednesday (Apr. 22) at St. Patrick School in Weston, Lewis County.

West Virginia State Treasurer John Perdue will invite fifth and sixth grade students at St. Patrick to participate in his award-winning financial education activity, Get a Life.

“For the past six years individual schools around the state have used this program as a financial learning tool for their students,” said Treasurer Perdue. “I am excited to introduce this activity to a new group of students during this year’s Money Smart Week.”

Get a Life is an interactive simulation designed to promote economic literacy. Students are given a realistic family budget and must visit various business stations and manage an expense ledger. The program teaches both basic math skills and problem-solving techniques.

“All you need to do is watch and listen to these students for a few minutes, and you’ll realize this learning activity has a lasting impact,” said Perdue.

Several local dignitaries and community leaders have volunteered to work the various stations set up for the activity. Volunteers include:

  • Julia Spelsburg, Weston Mayor
  • Sherry Lambert, Lewis County Chamber of Commerce
  • Katheryn Sims, The Property Shop
  • Kelly Hitt, Progressive Bank
  • Laurie Adams, Progressive Bank
  • Linda Riffle, Marion’s Boutique
  • Bob Ramsey, Ramsey Insurance Services
  • Phyllis Hinterer, Dominion National Resources
  • Larry Haddix, H&M Motors
  • Debbie Bennett, Edward Jones

The activity is part of State Treasurer John Perdue’s NetWorth program, a comprehensive financial education initiative designed to teach personal financial management skills at all grade levels in West Virginia. The program is nationally recognized and has received an Excellence in Financial Literacy Education Award (EIFLE) from the Institute for Financial Literacy.
