State Treasurer John Perdue presented the Jefferson County Commission with a $35,373.68 unclaimed property check Wednesday afternoon, representing state funds which had failed to reach their county destination.

“I love to visit the Eastern Panhandle and Jefferson County,” the Treasurer said. “Folks here may think they’ve been forgotten by Charleston, but not by me. Jefferson County helps comprise a progressive, booming area that manages to maintain its West Virginia charm.

“These funds are another gesture from my office that we value each and every contribution the Panhandle makes and it deserves any money due it.”

The money represents state government-issued checks to the county, which may have gotten lost on the way or fallen through the cracks in some other fashion. Most of the money is due the county commission itself, while other monies are due other county offices.

Unclaimed property is any asset from which an individual or an entity has become separated, such as a forgotten utility deposit, stock dividends left uncashed or life insurance proceeds. Real estate plays no part.

Treasurer Perdue’s administration has returned approximately $206 million in unclaimed funds since he took office in January of 1997.

The Treasury does not collect state taxes. Visit the The West Virginia State Tax Department for assistance.
